Buying Viagra in Barcelona online: how to tell a fake before you swallow it

Read this first: a counterfeit ED pill can contain too much of the drug, a different drug or nothing at all, and the label won't tell you. If you use nitrates for angina, that gamble can be dangerous. In Spain, prescription-only medicines may not be sold online, and customs can hold a parcel that contains them. We do not check prescriptions: talk to your doctor before you order.

There is no shortage of websites happy to post Viagra to a Barcelona address. Many are written in perfect English, some have a British-sounding name or a Union Jack somewhere on the page, and all promise fast, discreet delivery to your door. What very few of them say is where the tablets come from or who made them.

That matters more than the brand name on the blister. This page sets out what police and medicines regulators keep finding in pills like these, gives you a checklist that works on any website (including this one, which is a shop and not a pharmacy), and explains how to get a genuine prescription if you live in Barcelona.

What investigators keep finding

Interpol's Operation Pangea XVII ran for six months, from December 2024 to May 2025, across 90 countries. Officers seized 50.4 million doses of illicit medicines and took down around 13,000 websites, social media pages, channels and bots. Erectile dysfunction drugs were the second most seized category, behind medicines acting on the nervous system. Of everything seized, 93% had no approval from a national regulator.

Spain's medicines agency, the AEMPS, sees the same pattern on a smaller scale. Its official laboratory keeps testing products sold as herbal or “natural” and finding a prescription drug inside:

  • El Toro (October 2026): sold as natural; it contained enough sildenafil, the active ingredient of Viagra, to have a pharmacological effect. Nothing on the label said so.
  • Etumax Royal Honey and three other “honeys” (October 2026): sildenafil in all four, tadalafil (the drug in Cialis) in one, and paracetamol in another.
  • Vitafer-L (February 2025): labelled as a food supplement of amino acids, vitamins and minerals; it contained undeclared tadalafil.

Each notice ends with the same warning: people who take these products without knowing what is in them risk serious heart problems, including heart attack, arrhythmia and stroke, especially if they already have cardiovascular risk factors. The full list is on the AEMPS page for illegal medicines (in Spanish).

Why “it just didn't work” is the least of the risks

The European Medicines Agency puts it plainly: medicines bought from unregistered sellers may contain poor-quality ingredients or the wrong dose, be falsely labelled and come in fake packaging. They may not work, or they may be harmful. For an ED tablet, that translates into three concrete problems.

You don't know the dose. The maximum authorised dose of sildenafil is 100 mg once a day, and of tadalafil 20 mg. An unregulated pill can hold several times that.

You can't check for interactions. Sildenafil and tadalafil must never be combined with nitrates, the drugs in GTN sprays, isosorbide mononitrate tablets and nitrate patches. Someone using a “herbal honey” has no idea they are taking that risk.

There is no one to ask. No Spanish or English leaflet, no identifiable manufacturer, no pharmacist. If something goes wrong, you are on your own.

A checklist for any online seller, us included

Does it sell prescription medicines? Under Spanish law (Royal Decree 870/2013), only medicines that don't need a prescription may be sold online, and only by bricks-and-mortar pharmacies that have notified the authorities. Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, Spedra and all their generics are prescription-only in Spain. So any site that sells them to you here, whether it looks Spanish, British or anything else, is outside the legal supply chain. That includes this shop.

Does it show the EU common logo, and does the logo lead somewhere official? Registered online pharmacies in the EU display a common logo with the flag of the country where they are registered. Clicking it should take you to that country's official register; for Spain, that is the AEMPS list called Distafarma. According to the EMA, only the flags of EU countries, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein can appear on it, and a logo carrying the EU flag itself is not genuine. Since the UK is not on that list, a Union Jack logo does not make a site a legal supplier for someone in Spain. The safest move is to type the Distafarma address yourself and look the pharmacy up.

Does the box have the EU safety features? Since 9 February 2019, prescription medicines sold in the EU carry a unique 2D barcode on every pack and a seal that shows whether it has been opened. When a Spanish pharmacy hands the pack over, it checks the seal and scans the code against the national verification system, SEVeM. A parcel posted to you by a website skips that check.

Does the product exist in Spain? Spanish pharmacies stock sildenafil up to 100 mg, tadalafil and vardenafil up to 20 mg, and avanafil (Spedra) up to 200 mg. Kamagra, jelly sachets, “super” tablets combining two drugs and anything above those strengths are not authorised here. You can look up any product name in CIMA, the AEMPS medicines database.

Does it promise a natural erection in minutes? Be very wary of any herb, honey or sweet that claims to work like a pill. In the AEMPS notices, the explanation is usually a hidden drug.

How many red flags does that seller raise?

Safety first: have you already taken something from this seller and now have chest pain, severe dizziness, sudden loss of sight or hearing, or an erection lasting more than 4 hours?

Tick anything you have noticed on the site or the product:

Tick the warning signs you have seen and the result will appear here.

Being straight about this shop

We are a shop, not a pharmacy, and we are not on the Distafarma register. We have no shop or counter in Barcelona and don't sell in person; every order is posted or sent by courier on the terms set out on our delivery conditions page. What we send does not go through a Spanish pharmacy's SEVeM check, customs may hold the parcel, and nobody here checks whether you have a prescription. You should know that before you decide anything.

Our own catalogue, put through the same checks

  • Viagra Original: Pfizer's sildenafil, offered only as 100 mg, the maximum dose. It has not been verified by a Spanish pharmacy.
  • Cialis Original: tadalafil 20 mg, also the top dose; the product information suggests starting on 10 mg.
  • Kamagra: 100 mg sildenafil from Ajanta Pharma in India. Not authorised in Spain.
  • Kamagra Oral Jelly: sildenafil as a gel in sachets, a form not authorised in Spain.
  • Super Kamagra: sildenafil plus dapoxetine, a combination with no authorisation anywhere in the EU. We advise against it.

Already bought it, or already taken it?

Don't take it, or stop, if you use nitrates or riociguat, if your blood pressure runs low or if you have recently had a heart attack or stroke. Keep the packaging and a note of the website. Tell your doctor about anything unexpected. Anyone can report a suspected side effect to the AEMPS through notificaRAM.es; the form is in Spanish, so a translation tool or a Spanish-speaking friend helps.

Questions English speakers in Barcelona ask

The site says it is a UK pharmacy. Doesn't that make it safe?

Not for you in Spain. Spanish law bans online sales of prescription medicines whoever the seller is, and the EU common logo can only carry the flag of an EU country, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein. A British-registered pharmacy is outside that system.

Is “royal honey” a natural alternative?

Several honeys tested by the AEMPS contained undeclared sildenafil or tadalafil. Any effect people notice comes from the hidden drug, with all its risks and none of its warnings.

How do I check whether a Spanish online pharmacy is genuine?

It must have a physical pharmacy, sell only non-prescription medicines and appear on Distafarma. Click its EU logo, or better, search for it on the Distafarma site yourself.

Do I need to speak Catalan at the CAP?

No. Both Catalan and Spanish are official in Catalonia, and you can be seen in Spanish. If your Spanish is limited, bring someone who can help or prepare a short written summary of your symptoms and medicines.

The legal route in Barcelona: CAP, TSI card, urology

If you live here and are covered by the public system, you need CatSalut's individual health card, the TSI (targeta sanitària individual), and a family doctor at your local CAP (centre d'atenció primària, the Catalan name for a health centre). According to the city council's International Welcome service, you apply at the CAP with your ID or NIE, a recent certificate of registration on the padrón and, if you work or draw a pension, proof of Social Security cover. The card is free. For questions about the system, CatSalut answers on 061 (CatSalut Respon), and the council's TSI page explains each step in English.

If you are only staying for a few weeks or months, your European Health Insurance Card (known here as the TSE) or UK GHIC is meant for care you unexpectedly need during the stay. An ED prescription is rarely an emergency, so expect to sort it out with your own doctor or privately.

If you use a private doctor, their prescription works at any Spanish pharmacy, as long as they practise here. With an EU prescription, a Spanish pharmacy can dispense too, provided it carries the details the rules require; with a UK or US one, you will need to see a doctor here.

Whatever the route, the tablets cost you the full price: ED medicines are not funded by Spain's public health system. If your GP refers you to a specialist, the public hospitals with urology departments include Vall d'Hebron University Hospital, whose Andrology Unit diagnoses and treats erectile dysfunction, the Hospital Clínic and Bellvitge University Hospital.

Late at night or on a holiday you need a farmacia de guardia, the duty pharmacy. Barcelona's pharmacists' college points people to its real-time finder, Farmaguia. Rotas change, so check on the day.

Emergency: 112. Ring it if an ED tablet is followed by chest pain, a collapse or the feeling you are about to pass out, sight or hearing that suddenly goes, or an erection that hasn't subsided after 4 hours. For a possible overdose, the Servicio de Información Toxicológica answers on 91 562 04 20.

Other cities: choosing between the four pills in Madrid, foreign prescriptions and travelling with medicines in Málaga, alcohol and nights out in Palma.
